Well IGC are letting in the ASW20 and Discus into Club
Class next year, (and increasing the handicap on the
Std. Cirrus at long last!). Which one should I buy
- which is likely to be more competetive? or is there
an alternative? I would like higher performance for
non-competetive distance flying.

The most underhandicapped glider in the Club Class
is the DG101 IMHO. My Standard Cirrus glides nothing
like as well, despite having the same (2007) handicap.
If you want the best performance for non comp flying,
get a Discus, a DG300 or an ASW20/24.

The Discus is a great ship. I love it but compared with the ASW-24, IMHO it
does not handle as well as the Schleicher and the cockpit appointments are
not as comfy. If you can swing it, I'd say stretch for the '24. It will
probably serve you longer and grow with your abilities longer than the ASW-20
which seems may be getting a little "long in the performance tooth".

I must admit tho' I have not flown the '20 yet.

An AS-W20 "long in the tooth???

Certainly older but give little to nothing away to current generation
15 m ships in most conditions. Look at how many 1000 km / record
flights have been done in 20's. I believe Terry Delore flew the first
2000 km flight in one.

The -20 is probably the best all-around X-C ship ever built.
Excellent performance, good handling, and ergonomics, well crafted and
engineered and the flaps allow for outstanding off-field capability. I
would never buy a std class ship due to the lack of flaps.


If you are not top 20 in OLC or in the racing community,YOU are the
weakest link in the performance chain!

One thing I've noticed in aviation history;
"they don't build a lot of bad airplanes"
Let the ASW-20 numbers speak for themself
I think it's the second most built glider in history (the first being
the Blanik)
It is the most 15 meter ship built
There is a reason for this-
As Mark says -20's Rock!
